The Torres-Gil family established an ongoing scholarship to honor their mother's memory.
By Liz MacDonald
Fernado Torres-Gil and his siblings created the Maria J. Torres-Gil scholarship to honor the legacy of their mother while following the example she set: to always pay forward any generosity you receive.
Torres-Gil describes his mother as someone with old-fashioned virtues: “discipline, accountability, giving back and giving to others. ÐÔÊӽ紫ý, regardless of where you come from, was her first, second, third and fourth priority.”
The single mother of nine raised her children in the housing projects of Salinas, where she also organized the community around her to advocate for their children’s safety and education – one example being successfully lobbying for a bus stop to be added outside the projects so that the kids living there did not have to walk nearly a mile to attend school.
The Torres-Gil children chose to honor their mother’s legacy by creating a scholarship at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý because they wanted to support students from the Tri-County area who want to stay in the region.
